Those Boots are made for Walkin'

Walking is one of the best ways to be active and improve your health. You don't have to be a speed walker to benefit. When done at a slow pace walking mostly burns fat for fuel. When you pick up the pace the body begins to shift fuel from fats to carbohydrates--your body still burns fat but will also start to switch sugar into energy to add a little more pep to your step.

Because walking is a fat-burning, heart-pumping activity that can be done almost anywhere, it is a great way to keep your weight healthy. You can feel great, be fit and be healthy. Here's a few ways to build more walking into your days:

  • Skip the elevator--use the stairs
  • Go one or two extra blocks to the next bus stop
  • Walk your kids to school
  • Take walk break rather than a coffee break at work
  • Make your dog smile--go for walks more often
  • Try a family walk in the evening
